“Every nation gets the government it deserves.”

First, a quote that has often been misattributed to de Tocqueville:

“Every nation gets the government it deserves.”

~Joseph de Maistre (1811)

WE the PEOPLE have been asleep at the switch for almost five decades. We the People have been voting for cheap props;  whichever slick, silver-tongued corporatist-marionette placed before us as our candidates;  Each one hand-selected just for us; Scripted, packaged, and quite adept in their roles of constant lies and duplicitous deception.

A Bit of History:

Both Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt knew the disastrous dangers of [allowing] concentrated wealth to grow unchecked;  And both consequently fought tooth and nail against it;  Both fought the constant threat of corporate dominance knowing that, once the toe is over the threshold, easily leads to total Corporate takeover;  Corporate governance, also known as Corporatism, also known as Fascism.  The end result is the thorough and total destruction of the Republic, along with the entire notion of a “free” Democratic state;  Which,  in turn becomes another tyranny.

Of course, the J.P. Morgans of the Corporate Cabals, bitterly opposed the likes of the Roosevelts and were positively ruthless in their own smear campaigns to discredit and ultimately unseat them.  FDR knew them very well and I’ll quote him now: “Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people.”

Theodore Roosevelt was a wise and prescient man; He said the following inspiring words: “Corporation cunning has developed faster than the law of nation or state. Corporations have found ways to steal long before we have found that they were susceptible to punishment for theft. But sooner or later, unless there is a season of readjustment, there will come a riotous, wicked, murderous day of atonement…. These fools on Wall Street think that they can go on forever! They can’t!”

Both Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt succeeded in breaking the stranglehold of Corporate Monopolies, first through Theodore’s aggressive anti-monopoly and anti-trust legislation; And later by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s responsive counter to the big banks’ destruction, the Depression-era Glass-Steagal Act, among other critical Regulatory reforms. They were both aware and Altruistic and Decent enough to take these critical measures and more, all directly against the bitter opposition and the fervent protests by the Ruling Industry tycoons of the day, who are, incidentally, still the ruling tycoons, the main difference being that these Tycoons have indeed purchased our entire government.

So it is that today, everything, every single issue, every one of OUR RIGHTS;  Rights for which so many people in this country were willing to die;  Rights  which were struggled for and fought for HARD;  Everything that has been fought for long and hard over many years, Voting Rights for Black men and Women’s Suffrage, the Civil Rights movement, Worker’s Rights, Unions; all of these “basic” and “fundamental” Rights, brutally and violently opposed by the Ruling Classes, were fought for to produce and ensure a robust middle class; and to create and maintain a rudimentary measure of a more Fair and Just system for all, Rich and Poor alike.

Today, every organized effort, every life lost in pursuit of Fairness and Justice for all, has been thoroughly erased and intentionally destroyed. And WE the people, the hoodwinked, the lulled, the complacent, the lazy, have let it all happen. And now the Corporate takeover of the United States and of the entire world is complete.

Since the Carter administration deregulated the entire transportation industry, each administration since has followed, in lock-step, the ongoing and thorough DEREGULATION of each and every other industry; along with the ongoing Privatization of ALL previously public sectors, lands, etc.  Today, the only real requisite for political candidates is an unshakeable agenda;  A corporate agenda of More Deregulation and Privatization.

It truly does not matter who is installed in this U.S. government. Every Puppet-Administration–Democrat and Republican alike–are used as a mere distraction; An intentional diversion away from the ongoing and highly successful collaboration among thieves to continue their goals to commit Mass Fraud and to freely Plunder any place on earth, extracting by theft anything of value–even if it belongs to another “sovereign” nation. There are many institutions that have been created to advance this goal, such as the World Bank and the IMF; When thew usual first-line measures such as bribery, extortion, sanctions, embargoes; staged rebellions, coup d’etat, assassinations; when those initial measures fail, Wars of Aggression are often used as effective means to achieve the end goal, which does appear to be to own and control the entire world whilst enslaving us all.

A reality check is long overdue.  Candidates of this two-party system each have a  political platform to draw votes. Both parties run their [never-ending] campaigns on any issue that will please their voting base, all the while blatantly patronizing, impudently lying, telling us that 1. they CARE and, 2. they represent OUR interests. In reality, politicians do not know of any such concept as civic duty, moral obligation, the common good;  Indeed, most politicians, if not altogether illiterate;  If not totally uneducated in all topics, most curiously perhaps, U.S. HISTORY;  Politicians, by and large, do not even know the basics of the U.S. Constitution.

Politicians, like many people, are simply rapacious;  Forever pushing and flailing to get to the slop trough so that they too can roll around in filthy lucre, disgracefully spoilt, grotesque and bloated, brimming with privilege so often undeserved and that uniquely American trait the enormous sense of entitlement.mounds of filthy lucre. They are nothing if not scabby and greasy, always on the prowl, skulking around from town to town in cheap flimsy and ill-fitting sheep costumes.

So, are we expected to see this, um, spectacle, as a “real” option?  I mean, at this point, stop making excuses. Any attempt to differentiate in any way between Democrat and Republican is to prop up and perpetuate outright LIES. Democrats and Republicans are two selfsame, identical parties with identical interests and identical agendas, both willing collaborators and quislings for the Corporate money interests and the furtherance thereof.

So, with ALL of the stark and obvious warnings over the last four-five decades, all having been totally IGNORED by most of the citizenry, THIS is the FINAL wake up call.  If and ONLY if an Enormous Realization, a TRUE AWAKENING, occurs, I guess that this neo-feudal system of Peonage and debt-servitude will remain in place;  BUT, the longer the denial stays in place, the stronger the eventual revolt, which may result in the worst possible scenario:  Full Scale Revolution and simultaneous Civil War.

The Coming Revolution: Evolutionary Leap or Descent Into Chaos and Violence? | David DeGraw 10/9/14 11:26 AM

http://daviddegraw.org/the-coming-revolution-evolutionary-leap-or-descent-into-chaos-and-violence/

This is Part 3 in a series of adapted excerpts from my new book, The Economics of Revolution.

A Critical Crossroad A new paradigm is organically evolving: new economic systems, sustainable communities, solar energy, organic farming, liquid democracy, worker co-ops and new media. For all the problems we are confronted by, there are existing viable solutions. There is much to feel positive about. A decentralized global uprising is undermining systems of centralized and consolidated power. A new world is being born. However, as exciting as the evolution presently occurring is, after extensive research I am forced to confront the fact that I do not see how emerging solutions will reach a critical mass and create the needed change before the affects of inequality, poverty and the overall deterioration of society will lead to widespread chaos and violence.

As much as I wish this wasn’t the case, as much as I want to just disengage from the status quo and focus on the implementation of local solutions, we cannot ignore the urgent need for significant systemic change on a mass scale now. The longer mainstream society stays on the present course, the worse things will get and the harder it will be to overcome the growing crisis. No matter how much we are inclined to ignore it, we will not be able to escape this reality: under present economic and government policy, more and more people will fall deeper into debt and extreme poverty. The present economy only works for 30% of the population, tens of millions of people have been mathematically eliminated. There are only enough full-time jobs for 50% of the working-age population, and half of the fulltime jobs pay under $35k per year.

Since 2007, the economy has lost over 14 million full-time jobs while the overall population has grown by 17 million people. In current conditions, it is impossible for 70% of the working-age population to earn enough income to afford basic necessities without taking on ever-increasing levels of debt, which they will never be able to pay back because there are not enough jobs that generate the necessary income to keep up with the cost of living. From 2007 – 2013, overall wealth increased 26%, while the median household lost a shocking 43% of their wealth. If median wealth continues to decline at this rate, over 50% of US households will be bankrupt within the next decade. Mainstream propaganda has temporarily obscured the fact that we are sitting on a ticking economic time bomb.

Statistical fraud by the government on poverty, cost of living and unemployment cannot cover up the fact that the overwhelming majority of the population is on a fast track to impoverishment. The government’s policies and actions in dealing with the growing epidemic of poverty are the very definition of tyranny. It couldn’t be more blatant. Just when the economy has reached a point where there are not enough jobs that generate an adequate income to sustain the cost of living for the majority of the population, the government is cutting billions of dollars from assistance programs and pouring billions of dollars into the military and prison industry. An out of control private military complex is fueling violent conflicts abroad. A perpetual state of never-ending war is exhausting public wealth, with trillions of dollars diverted from social programs into the pockets of war profiteers. Here at home, the police force is being militarized and the private prison industry is growing at a shocking 1600% rate. We already have the largest prison population in the world. The current per capita rate is worse than the darkest days of the Soviet Gulags.

On top of that, many cities are now criminalizing poverty. As ominous as it may sound, a tyrannical assembly line of incarceration is now in place. Based on existing evidence and key indicators it is logical to think that increasing desperation within large segments of the population will soon lead to chaos and riots. Factor in the militarized police force, which will escalate violence and oppression, and this highly probable scenario will tear our nation apart. We are at a critical crossroad. Are we on the verge of an evolutionary leap, or will shortsighted greed descend us into madness and destruction? Will significant systemic change happen quick enough to prevent a much larger collapse? The ultimate point is that there is presently more than enough wealth and capabilities to solve societal problems. We can truly evolve society in unprecedented fashion.

We live in the most wealthy and technologically advanced society in the history of civilization. In the US, we have $94.4 trillion in wealth. People should not have to struggle and be buried in debt to get basic necessities and live a healthy life. It is an absolute crime against humanity for poverty to exist in today’s society. With only 0.5% of the richest 1% of the population’s wealth, we can eliminate poverty nationwide. Having poverty makes no economic sense whatsoever. It costs society more to have poverty than it costs to eliminate it. That is the insanity of the current system. For one of many examples of how we can begin to address this urgent crisis, the Federal Reserve’s Quantitative Easing (QE) program created $4 trillion, out of thin air, under the guise of stimulating job growth. However, since QE started the economy has lost over 10 million full-time workers.

Most of the $4 trillion created through QE went to only 1% of the population. Clearly, giving another $4 trillion to people who already had a stunning $21 trillion in unused wealth was not an effective stimulus for the overall economy. If they truly wanted to stimulate the economy, they could have given the $4 trillion to every nonmillionaire household, which would have been $40,000 per household, or they could have given 114,285,714 people $35,000 each. If we clawback QE from the ultra-rich, we can eliminate poverty and guarantee a Living Income to every person over the age of 18. This is just one example of many things that can easily be done when you have $94.4 trillion in wealth. In a technologically advanced society, where fewer and fewer workers are needed, we have to address the issue of providing basic necessities to everyone. We cannot just throw 70% of the population overboard. That will lead to chaos and riots. Instead of increased productivity and wealth being a very good thing for overall society, the shortsighted greed of the richest .01% of the population has systematically taken the increase in wealth for themselves, robbing us of a life of liberty, economic security and freedom.

Page 5 of 9 Most people are unaware of the paradigm shift in technology and wealth creation that should have provided economic security and made life much more enjoyable for everyone well over a generation ago. We haven’t evolved the political and economic system because the mainstream media has not revealed to the general public that we have $94.4 trillion in wealth, with $25 trillion of it unused. If people knew that this much wealth existed, and could comprehend the implications of what could be done with just a fraction of it, we would have a revolution. At this point, a significant portion of the population knows that our present system is unsustainable and unstable, even many of the richest .01% will now acknowledge that. We already have a critical mass of aware citizens, we just need to inspire and organize them to build the cultural and political will. Alas, the horrifying socio-economic reality haunts me; after extensive research, it is clear that we don’t have much time left before we descend into chaos. If we want to change things through nonviolent methods, the window of opportunity is closing fast. We need to radically intensify the pace in which change is occurring. The .01% and political class must urgently acquiesce to the needs of the people. As John Kennedy once said, “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” The statistical evidence is clear. We have reached the tipping point. Revolution is coming, one way or the other.

AN50:

Blah, blah, blah

CM:
Thank you for your thoughtful and considered response on the Human Dilemma, for one. I appreciate your sharing your observations.

Both Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. knew very well that WE–Each of US–must BE the world we would like to see or to create.
Individually, we are all 100% responsible and accountable for every single action and, conversely, every inaction, that we decide while living here on earth;

Collectively, we are all 100% responsible and accountable for what we, as a group, put forth as cornerstones, as the foundation of our society;

The goal then being the successful creation of a relatively stable, mutually respectful, well-adjusted, healthy, mindful, educated, altruistic, compassionate, and honest citizenry; One which can and does assess itself often and with earnest integrity.

One may judge, as I myself most certainly judge my own, a particular society on, say, how it’s collective members look upon and treat its most unfortunate, most vulnerable, and weakest members.

There are those among us who believe it best to simply let nature take its course; Let the weakest fend for themselves and eventually they’ll die off; Survival of the fittest, Natural selection, etc. etc.

There is, on the flip side, a group among us who believe, as I myself do, that we are all responsible for each other; So, We are all responsible for inspiring individual success; We are then also responsible for cultivating genuine humility; We are all responsible for acknowledging and actively encouraging all others’ altruism, i.e. real contributions to society as a whole.

To be clear: I believe strongly in fair taxation if and only if the money is spent for the total abolition of Poverty in America; for the building and maintenance of infrastructure; Education for all citizens; Direct access to Health Care for all citizens, which will include the total elimination of “health care insurance;” And for the Programs that benefit the Common Good, that which has not been considered at all by this or any other government since the days of Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society.

And No. I am not even leaning slightly toward Communist. That is Fascism and so is THIS in America. What I say is that in the richest nation on earth, there is absolutely no excuse for any poverty. Period. Every one that works MUST, by definition, be Paid a LIVING WAGE. In other words, no slavery.

Progressive taxation and NO OBSCENE Wealth allowed. Period. NO ONE–NOT ONE PERSON– is “worth” these kinds of appalling figures, in the billions and trillions. It is GHASTLY. And As a society, the total reset, reevaluation of what is actually tangibly valuable must occur.

Financiers and bankers are WORTHLESS. THEY bring Society NOTHING. thus it is THEY who are the DREGS of Society. Therefore, “they” GET NOTHING because they are WORTHLESS.

Teachers, Doctors, REAL CONTRIBUTORS to society will be paid well and will be respected and their salaries, as every one else’s will be commensurate with their actual contributions to the Common Good.

KNOWLEDGE and Useful Skills are GOOD; Therefore, knowledge and skills are to be deemed VALUABLE.

Reality television, on the other hand, as with all the other narcissistic and idiotic worthlessness, in general, is to be viewed by society with nothing other than pure disdain and utter contempt, because it is all disdainful and it is all contemptible.

We MUST re-evaluate and re-define what is “VALUABLE.”

Thank you for your response, though you’re wrong in your assumptions on all of my stances.

Here, let me clarify:

First, No, I do NOT believe AT ALL in reliance on ANY form of government, whether Large or Small, Federal or State.

You write this: “Yours, the old fashioned way, the way humans have done it for all recorded human history, by law, by the top down, by command and authority.”

More, Point by point:

1. Laws, you say? Whose Laws? Written by and for whom? Like Hell.
2. Authority? HELL No. Whose “Authority” and by whose rules and commands? Sure.
3. Top Down? NO. NO. NO. WRONG.

The Parasites, to be clear, ARE indeed the parasites who forever reside within this government, for they are ALL living directly and quite lavishly off of US. Indeed, once on the taxpayer dole, the true parasites NEVER leave. Willingly, that is.

Acute and Total Systemic Failure calls for extraordinary measures. And if those lifetime parasites, those who reside within this government of ours, if they continue on in their ignorant refusal to acknowledge their own ABJECT FAILURE, there are but a few options.

I myself would love to personally and forcibly yank them all out by their hair, out of their seats of disgrace and total failure. On the other hand, I do not want to see Revolution and/or Civil War. BUT, if the IMPUDENT CRIMINALITY of our so-called Leaders continues on unchecked as it has, that IS what may happen.
Peace.

NOOZHAWK Article: Local Police Receive New Patrol Cars (October 6th, 2014)

Here is the Article:

http://www.noozhawk.com/article/local_police_new_patrol_cars_20141005

My Responses:

The starting salary of an S.B. Police Officer is, according to Noozhawk in 2012:

“The average 2012 salary and overtime for an Santa Barbara police officer was $99,084 per year, with sergeants bringing in $130,476 annually. A top-step police officer can cost the city $180,830 per year in salary, benefits and taxes.”

Most of us who are not a part of the Military Industrial Complex, which now apparently wholly encompasses Police Departments, paying for it with OUR Tax dollars, are simply left to languish in Debt Servitude, mired in the Reagan-esque “Trickle-Down” LIE, the new “Service” Economy, i.e. Sharecropper System.

America is “Great” if and only if you’re rich;
And only if you truly enjoy continual Wars of American Aggression;
And only if you love Bank Fraud;
And only if you love gigantic monopolistic corporations that pay ZERO dollars in Taxes;
And only if you love sending your children to fake colleges for totally worthless “degrees;
And only if you love Unemployment;
And only if you love being bankrupted by “Health Care Insurance;”
And only if you love being bankrupted by “Student Loan” Debt;
And only if you love being bankrupted by fraudulent mortgages;
And only if you love an entire government run by greasy, duplicitous little politicians who Lie, Cheat and Steal from the Taxpayers to line their own pockets and give Trillions of dollars to the Banking Cartels;

And if you don’t give a damn about the Poor, the Elderly, the Disabled Miserables…

What a “Great” country indeed!!

Local Police Ready to Roll Out New Squad Cars as Ford Crown Vic Nears End of the Road on Noozhawk

Yes…While this government, ostensibly a government of “We the People,” but in reality, a government that works exclusively, decade after decade, on behalf of the money interests of the enormously wealthy Corporate Persons, thereby positively fortifying that wealth and consolidating THEIR power and the Quisling marionettes in this absolute Joke of a government (Quick, Go look up Kleptocracy–NarcoKleptocracy works just as well).

WE the PEOPLE, on the other hand, get NOTHING. WE get to hand over a large portion of our hard- earned income to crooks; So that these crooks, sell-out politicians, not only bail out trillionaire bankers again and again with OUR money, but they also get to fritter our hard-earned tax dollars for such imperatives as quadrupling the budget for militarization and the redoubling of the efforts to ramp up our police and our military.

Meanwhile, all programs designed for the common good, for social uplift, etc. have been systematically dismantled and destroyed. Intentionally. And the filthy rich get richer and filthier.

This is sick beyond words. And this IS America.

Okay. In one word: PRIORITIES

In other words, our very own elected officials would rather arm the local police to the teeth and give them brand new gigantic gas guzzlers, not to mention allowing them more and more “authority” to throw their weight around and bully the very people who pay their salaries; A top priority.
Meanwhile, the average people in this country are left with a criminally corrupt and irretrievably corporatist government; A government that would rather send our poorest, most vulnerable youths to WAR; A government that would rather allow millions and millions of people to lose their homes, jobs, savings, retirement, et al, in the interest of BANKS, yes, the thoroughly Fraudulent banking cartels and Corporate empires that have absolutely NO ALLEGIANCE to America or anything else BUT MONEY.

“Please elaborate on how corporations are paying zero dollars in taxes.”
ANSWER:
MEET THE TOP WALL STREET AND CORPORATE TAX DODGERS
On February 7, 2013, Senator Bernie Sanders is introducing
legislation to crack down on Wall Street and corporate tax avoiders that
are avoiding tens of billions in taxes every year by shifting profits
to the Cayman Islands and other tax havens. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL)
is introducing the companion bill in the House.
The Business Roundtable represents some of the largest Wall Street and corporate tax avoiders in the country.
Recently, the Business Roundtable came out with a plan to raise the
eligibility age for Medicare and Social Security to 70, cut Social
Security and veterans’ benefits, and increase taxes on working families.
Many of the corporations and Wall Street banks represented by the Business Roundtable have:
 avoided more than $128 billion in taxes by setting up over 500
subsidiaries in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, and other offshore tax
havens since 2008;
 received more than $6.5 billion in tax refunds from the IRS, after making billions in profits;
 outsourced hundreds of thousands of American jobs to China and
other low wage countries, forcing their workers to receive unemployment
insurance and other federal benefits; and
 received a total taxpayer bailout of more than $2.5 trillion from
the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department and nearly caused the
economy to collapse over four years ago.
Instead of cutting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and
veterans’ benefits, it is time for these corporate and Wall Street tax
dodgers to pay their fair share in taxes and bring jobs back home to
America.
Here are just a few examples of how the corporations and Wall Street
banks these CEOs work for have significantly harmed our economy and the
federal budget:
1. Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan.
Number of Offshore Tax Havens in 2010? 371.
In 2010, Bank of America operated 371 subsidiaries incorporated in
offshore tax havens. 204 of these subsidiaries are incorporated in the
Cayman Islands, which has a corporate tax rate of 0%.
Amount of federal income taxes Bank of America would have owed if offshore tax havens were eliminated? $2.5 billion.
Bank of America has stashed $18.5 billion in offshore tax havens to
avoid paying U.S. income taxes. Bank of America would owe an estimated
$2.5 billion in federal income taxes if its use of offshore tax
avoidance was eliminated.
Amount of federal income taxes paid in 2010? Zero. $1.9 billion tax refund.
Bank of America received a $1.9 billion tax refund from the IRS in 2010, even though it made $4.4 billion in profits.
Taxpayer Bailout from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department? Over $1.3 trillion.
During the financial crisis, Bank of America received a total of
more than $1.3 trillion in virtually zero interest loans from the
Federal Reserve and a $45 billion bailout from the Treasury Department.
2. JP Morgan Chase CEO James Dimon
Number of Offshore Tax Havens in 2010? 83.
In 2010, JP Morgan Chase operated 83 subsidiaries incorporated in offshore tax havens.
Amount of federal income taxes JP Morgan Chase would have owed if offshore tax havens were eliminated? $4.9 billion
JP Morgan Chase has stashed $21.8 billion in offshore tax haven
countries to avoid payng income taxes. If this practice was outlawed, it
would have paid $4.9 billion in federal income taxes.
Taxpayer Bailout from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department? $416 billion
During the financial crisis, JP Morgan Chase received a total of
more than $391 billion in virtually zero interest loans from the Federal
Reserve and a $25 billion bailout from the Treasury Department, while
Jamie DImon served as a director of the New York Federal Reserve.
3. Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein
Amount of federal income taxes paid in 2008? Zero. $278 million tax refund.
In 2008, Goldman Sachs received a $278 million refund from the IRS, even though it earned a profit of $2.3 billion that year.
Number of offshore tax havens in 2010? 39.
In 2010, Goldman Sachs operated 39 subsidiaries in offshore tax haven countries.
Amount of federal income taxes Goldman Sachs would have owed if offshore tax havens were eliminated? $3.32 billion.
Goldman Sachs has stashed $20.63 billion in offshore tax haven
countries to avoid payng income taxes. If this practice was outlawed, it
would have paid $3.32 billion in federal income taxes.
Taxpayer Bailout from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department? $824 billion.
During the financial crisis, Goldman Sachs received a total of $814
billion in virtually zero interest loans from the Federal Reserve and a
$10 billion bailout from the Treasury Department.
4. General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt
Number of offshore tax havens? At least 14.
GE has at least 14 tax haven subsidiaries in Bermuda, Singapore, and Luxembourg for the purpose of avoiding U.S. income taxes.
Amount of federal income taxes General Electric would have owed if offshore tax havens were eliminated? $35.7 billion.
GE has stashed $102 billion in offshore tax haven countries to avoid
paying income taxes. If this practice was outlawed, it would have paid
$35.7 billion more in federal income taxes.
Amount of federal income taxes paid in 2010? Zero. $3.3 billion tax refund.
In 2010, not only did General Electric pay no federal income taxes,
it received a $3.3 billion tax refund from the IRS, even though it
earned over $5 billion in U.S. profits.
Taxpayer Bailout from the Federal Reserve? $16 billion.
During the financial crisis, the Federal Reserve provided GE with
$16 billion in financial assistance, at a time when Jeffrey Immelt was a
director of the New York Federal Reserve.
Jobs Shipped Overseas? At least 25,000 since 2001.
Since 2001, General Electric has closed more than 30 manufacturing
plants in the United States, cut 34,000 American jobs, and added 25,000
jobs overseas. General Electric now has more workers abroad than it does
in the United States.
On December 6, 2002, Jeffrey Immelt, the CEO of General Electric,
said at an investor’s meeting: “When I am talking to GE managers, I
talk China, China, China, China, China. You need to be there. You need
to change the way people talk about it and how they get there. I am a
nut on China. Outsourcing from China is going to grow to $5 billion. We
are building a tech center in China. Every discussion today has to
center on China. The cost basis is extremely attractive. You can take an
18 cubic foot refrigerator, make it in China, land it in the United
States, and land it for less than we can make an 18 cubic foot
refrigerator today, ourselves.” Jeffrey Immelt, Chairman, CEO of
General Electric, quoted at an investor meeting on December 6, 2002.
5. Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam
Amount of federal income taxes paid in 2010? Zero. $705 million tax refund.
In 2010, Verizon received a $705 million refund from the IRS despite earning $11.9 billion in pre-tax U.S. profits.
Amount of federal income taxes Verizon would have owed if offshore tax havens were eliminated? $525 million.
Verizon has stashed $1.5 billion in offshore tax havens to avoid
paying U.S. income taxes. Verizon would owe an estimated $525 million in
federal income taxes if its use of offshore tax avoidance was
eliminated.
American Jobs Cut in 2010? In 2010, Verizon announced 13,000 job cuts, the third highest corporate layoff total that year.
6. Honeywell International CEO David Cote
Amount of federal income taxes paid from 2008-2010? Zero. $34 million tax refund.
From 2008 through 2010, not only did Honeywell pay no federal income

Cornel West’s 8 Most Eye-Opening Critiques of Barack Obama’s Presidency

In his new book, West blasts the president for failing African Americans and the poor.

October 6, 2014 |

Very few progressive voices articulate more vitriol and uncompromising disdain for President Barack Obama than Cornel West. During Obama’s six years in the White House, West has critiqued every layer of the president’s policies, from his use of drones in the Middle East to what he feels is the president’s cozy relationship with Wall Street.

In 2011, West wrote in the New York Times that Obama has fallen short of epitomizing Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream.

“The age of Obama has fallen tragically short of fulfilling King’s prophetic legacy,” he wrote. “Instead of articulating a radical democratic vision and fighting for homeowners, workers and poor people in the form of mortgage relief, jobs and investment in education, infrastructure and housing, the administration gave us bailouts for banks, record profits for Wall Street and giant budget cuts on the backs of the vulnerable.”

West’s commentary is a breath of fresh air for some who feel they’d be blacklisted in liberal circles for criticizing the president, while others see his remarks as coming from a space of personal bitterness. Regardless of where you stand on West’s opinions, his remarks are always worthy of further inspection. In an excerpt from his new book Black Prophetic Fire, West outlines why he believes Obama has turned his back on the black philosophical traditions that put him in the White House. Here are eight of the most insightful quotes.

1. African Americans Have Done Worse Under Obama

“The great irony of our time is that in the age of Obama the grand black prophetic tradition is weak and feeble. Obama’s black face of the American empire has made it more difficult for black courageous and radical voices to bring critique to bear on the U.S. empire. On the empirical or lived level of black experience, black people have suffered more in this age than in the recent past. Empirical indices of infant mortality rates, mass incarceration rates, mass unemployment and dramatic declines in household wealth reveal this sad reality.”

2. Leadership In The African-American Community Has Weakened

“First, there is the shift of black leadership from the voices of social movements to those of elected officials in the mainstream political system. This shift produces voices that are rarely if ever critical of this system. How could we expect the black caretakers and gatekeepers of the system to be critical of it?”

3. Upward Mobility Is The Worst In The Modern World

“Second, this neoliberal shift produces a culture of raw ambition and instant success that is seductive to most potential leaders and intellectuals, thereby incorporating them into the neoliberal regime. This culture of superficial spectacle and hyper-visible celebrities highlights the legitimacy of an unjust system that prides itself on upward mobility of the downtrodden. Yet, the truth is that we live in a country that has the least upward mobility of any other modern nation!”

4. Leaders Who Challenge the Statue Quo Are Silenced

“Third, the U.S. neoliberal regime contains a vicious repressive apparatus that targets those strong and sacrificial leaders, activists, and prophetic intellectuals who are easily discredited, delegitimated, or even assassinated, including through character assassination. Character assassination becomes systemic and chronic, and it is preferable to literal assassination because dead martyrs tend to command the attention of the sleepwalking masses and thereby elevate the threat to the status quo.”

5. Mass Media Ignores Voices That Take on Issues Such as Use of Drones and War Crimes

“The central role of mass media, especially a corporate media beholden to the U.S. neoliberal regime, is to keep public discourse narrow and deodorized. By ‘narrow’ I mean confining the conversation to conservative Republican and neoliberal Democrats who shut out prophetic voices or radical visions. This fundamental power to define the political terrain and categories attempts to render prophetic voices invisible. The discourse is deodorized because the issues that prophetic voices highlight, such as mass incarceration, wealth inequality, and war crimes such as imperial drones murdering innocent people, are ignored.”

6. Obama Doesn’t Really Care About Protecting Working People

“The state of black America in the age of Obama has been one of desperation, confusion, and capitulation. The desperation is rooted in the escalating suffering on every front. The confusion arises from a conflation of symbol and substance. The capitulation rests on an obsessive need to protect the first black president against all forms of criticism. Black desperation is part of a broader desperation among poor and working people during the age of Obama. The bailout of Wall Street by the Obama administration, rather than the bailout of homeowners, hurt millions of working people.”

7. First Lady Michelle Obama Legitimizes Obama’s “Symbolic Status”

“Needless to say, the presence of his brilliant and charismatic wife, Michelle—a descendent of enslaved and Jim-Crowed people, unlike himself—even more deeply legitimizes his symbolic status, a status that easily substitutes for substantial achievement.”

8. To Be Successful and Black, One Must Turn His Back on the Poor

“To be a highly successful black professional or politician is too often to be well adjusted to injustice and well adapted to indifference toward poor people, including black poor people. The black prophetic tradition is fundamentally committed to the priority of poor and working people, thus pitting it against the neoliberal regime, capitalist system, and imperial policies of the U.S. government.”

Toward the end of the book, West writes how modern black leadership has abandoned the traditions that have helped position it and President Obama. “What does it profit a people for a symbolic figure to gain presidential power if we turn our backs from the suffering of poor and working people, and thereby lose our souls?” he writes. “The black prophetic tradition has tried to redeem the soul of our fragile democratic experiment. Is it redeemable?”
